Questions readers ask after a prostate cancer diagnosis

A diagnosis can bring urgent questions about treatment, side effects, second opinions, and what happens next. The questions below are starting points for conversations with licensed clinicians—not individualized medical advice.

Can I ask for a second opinion?

Yes. Asking a specialist to explain the diagnosis, test findings, treatment options, risks, and expected outcomes can help you make a more informed decision. Ask how much time is medically reasonable to consider the options in your particular case.

What should I ask about treatment tradeoffs?

Ask how each medically appropriate option could affect cancer control, urinary function, sexual function, bowel health, and quality of life. Ask about uncertainty and what follow-up testing will be needed.

What is the role of monitoring?

Follow-up testing helps clinicians assess disease activity and response to treatment. A favorable result at one point in time does not necessarily remove the need for ongoing follow-up. Your clinician can advise which tests are appropriate.

What about unconventional approaches?

The memoir describes choices the author personally explored. Anecdotes do not establish that unconventional treatments are safe or effective against cancer. Some can interact with medical care or delay treatment that is known to help. Discuss supplements and any complementary approaches with your oncology team.
